HERO BX, once one of the larger names in U.S. biodiesel production, was ordered into receivership last summer after a lender sued the company for more than $6.1 million over a defaulted loan. The fallout: a court-ordered auction that now includes two of the company's production plants and all associated assets.
The sites going up for bid sit in Clinton, Iowa and South Roxana, Illinois. Both are located inside what's arguably the most critical biofuel corridor in the country. The sale covers all real estate, production equipment, and supporting infrastructure at each location. Both plants will be sold individually rather than as a package.
Timing matters here. Recent changes to federal biofuel policy have moved in producers' favor, and a stretch of elevated Renewable Identification Number (RIN) prices, the credits refiners use to prove biofuel blending, combined with higher Renewable Volume Obligations have driven feedstock and renewable energy values up across the board. Operators with capacity already built stand to benefit, and acquiring existing infrastructure is far cheaper than starting from scratch.
Iowa remains the country's top biodiesel-producing state, backed by robust state tax credits and infrastructure grants that meaningfully support operational margins. South Roxana, just across the river from St. Louis, sits inside its own high-volume production zone with direct access to barge and rail logistics, useful leverage for any buyer planning a restart.
Maas Company is offering virtual tours of both sites, an inspection window, and additional viewings by appointment. Sealed bids are due June 18.
Why it matters: For investors, processors, and existing biodiesel operators looking to expand their footprint, these facilities offer a rare path to operational scale without a multi-year build cycle. For collectors and haulers feeding the biodiesel supply chain in the Midwest, the resale and eventual restart of these plants, whoever ends up owning them, could reopen offtake demand in two regions that have been quieter since HERO BX's troubles began.
